The Kerala University Library (KUL), established in 1942, is the oldest and biggest university library in Kerala and is situated adjacent to the University Senate Hall campus in the Thiruvananthapuram city.  It stocks over 3,50,000 books (growing at 5000 titles annually) and subscribes to nearly 500 journals/ periodicals/ magazines. It also offers digital information services such as UGC Infonet. Among its special collections, the Kerala Studies is a unique one.  The special collections also include Women’s Studies, Government Publications, General Biographies, UN and World Bank Publications, bound volumes of newspapers and journals and rare books.  It is the only library in Kerala which serves as a depository of UN and World Bank publications. The library is currently in the process of digitizing its rare collections.

The University in Travancore, founded in 1937 had at its disposal the Trivandrum Public Library until a separate library was started in the present Arts College building. This was soon shifted to the eastern side of the University College (which was then under direct control of the University), in 1946.  The present building was constructed with UGC assistance of 10 lakhs and started functioning in September 1962. Prof.  K. A. Isaac, a student of Prof. S. R. Ranganathan, was appointed as the Full time librarian in 1959.  He continued to lead the library until 1980 when Sri K.C. John succeeded him.  Prof Ranganathan's influence on the Kerala University Library is still extant in the form of usage of colon system of cataloging devised by him.

The Kerala University Library is complemented with a number of specialised Department Libraries and also Campus Library at Karyavattom and Study Centre Libraries at Alappuzha, Kollam and Pandalam.  The University Institutes of Technology (UITs), University Teacher Education Centres (UTECs), and University College of Engineering (UCE) also have specialized libraries.

Faculty members, Librarians and Research scholars from all the teaching departments of the University are eligible to get access.


Scopus from Elseviers is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature: scientific journals, books and conference proceedings, is now available in the University of Kerala. It helps to evaluate the impact of research, by searching for publications of an institution and view the publishing output, collaboration affiliations for these publications and compare publication activity of various institutions in a particular subject area.

EBSCO Discovery Service

EBSCO Discovery Service is now available in the Kerala University Library. This service is intended for bringing together all the subscribed contents of the library before the users through a single search window.

Chemical Abstracts Service

Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), a division of the American Chemical Society, is the world's authority for chemical information. IEEE Xplore

IEEE Xplore by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), is now available in the Kerala University Library. IEEE produces over 30% of the world's literature in the electrical and electronics engineering and computer science fields, publishing well over 100 peer-reviewed journals.


Library and Information Science Abstracts is an international abstracting and indexing tool designed for library professionals and other information specialists. LISA currently abstracts over 440 periodicals from more than 68 countries and in more than 20 different languages.

J-Gate Plus

J-Gate is an electronic gateway to global e-journal literature. Launched in 2001 by Informatics India Limited, J-Gate provides seamless access to millions of journal articles available online offered by 9,000+ Publishers. It presently has a massive database of journal literature, indexed from 29,000+ e-journals with links to full text at publisher sites. This service is activated in the Kerala Univeisty Library. is a vast collection of interdisciplinary Indian Journals and Research Publications. This service is now avaialble in the Kerala Univeisty Library.

E-Books from Cambridge University Press

Cambridge University Press is one of the largest and most prestigious academic publishers in the world and is widely respected as a world leader in publishing for subjects as diverse as astronomy, Shakespeare studies, economics, mathematics and politics. Access to Cambridge Books Online is available at the Kerala University Library.

E-Books from Wiley Online Library

Access to Wiley Online Library is available at the Keala University Library. Wiley Blackwell publishes narly 1,500 peer-reviewed journals and 1,500+ new books annually in print and online format.

ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Abstract Int.

ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Abstract, the world's most comprehensive collection of dissertations and theses is available in KUL. Full Text includes nearly 3 million searchable citations to dissertation and theses from around the world from 1743 to the present day together with over 1 million full-text dissertations that are available for download in PDF format. The database offers full text for most of the dissertations added since 1997 and strong retrospective full-text coverage for older graduate works.

SHODHGANGA The University of Kerala has signed Memorandum of Understanding with INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad for the “Digital Repository of Theses” viz. SHODHGANGA, on 20th July 2012. The MoU was signed by Hon. Vice Chancellor Dr. A Jayakrishnan and Dr. Jagdish Arora, Director, INFLIBNET Centre. The Shodhganga@INFLIBNET Centre provides a platform for research students to deposit their Ph.D. theses and make it available to the entire scholarly community in open access. The repository has the ability to capture, index, store, disseminate and preserve ETDs submitted by the researchers

Web of Science, provides access to the world's leading citation databases. It searches over 10,000 journals from over 45 different languages across the sciences, social sciences, and arts and humanities with back files to 1900. The citations (or footnotes) allow one to navigate forward, backward, and through journal articles and both journal and book-based proceedings. Visit

DAISY BOOKS The Library has a collection of DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System) books,  for the use of people have “print disabilities”, including blindness, impaired vision, dyslexia etc.   The DAISY format allows users to hear and navigate written material presented in an audible format.  The  content is presented with enabled navigation within a sequential and hierarchical structure consisting of marked-up text synchronized with audio.  DAISY digital talking books offer the benefits of regular audio books, but they are superior because DAISY includes navigation.
